We’ll arrange to have our guide meet your bus group at either the North or South Visitor Center to begin your 28-mile journey through 12 main points of interest in the park. Your guide will ride along to talk about key features, providing insight to the biology, geology, history, paleontology and archaeology in the park.
There are seven developed trails, rated easy to moderate, and ranging from 1 to 2.5 miles. We’ll select from these trails to customize an experience for your group based on the time you have allotted for your visit and the abilities and interests of your group.
Some of the must-see stops include a walk-thru of the Historic Painted Desert Inn on the rim of the famed Painted Desert, the ancient ruins of Puerco Pueblo (dating back to 1200 AD), the vibrantly colored fossilized petrified wood at Crystal Forest, and the largest logs in the park along the Giant Logs Trail. Other scenic overlooks along the way will allow for plenty of photo opportunities and inspirational views.
An abbreviated tour can be accomplished in a minimum of 2 hours, and this would include only a stop or two in the park. The ideal tour for most groups which includes 4 main stops requires a minimum of 3 to 4 hours. There are restrooms at the midway point of the park at Puerco Pueblo.
Longer tours should consider packed lunches or arriving to the North end restaurant at the start or the finish of the tour. Each participant should bring plenty of water along. Bottle refill stations (seasonally operational) are located at each of the visitor centers.
Elevation, sun and heat are important considerations, especially during the warmer months. Participants can best prepare for conditions with sunscreen, hats, light clothing, wind breakers and sturdy shoes.
