The Young Paleontologist’s Fossil Exploration class is designed as an option for kids that are too young to participate in the Fossil Dig and Excavation class but still want to learn about Triassic fossils and the work of paleontologists.
Fossil Dig: Discovery and Excavation
Painted Desert Visitor Center 1 Park Road, Petrified Forest National Park, AZPrepare to get dirty digging in the Triassic Chinle Formation for fossil bones of giant amphibians, reptiles, and even early dinosaurs. Join the park paleontologist for a fossil dig in the Petrified Forest National Park. This one day excursion provides an introduction to paleontology field work.
Ice Cream Rocks and Lumberyard Tour
Painted Desert Visitor Center 1 Park Road, Petrified Forest National Park, AZWe’ll spend some time visiting the Ice Cream Rocks to inspect and ponder the remnants of these events and appreciate the artistic prose of a masterful conductor- erosion. From there we’ll journey on through some breathtaking landscapes to a hidden preserve of petrified wood in an area we call the Lumberyard, named for its presentation among petrified chips of wood.
