Landscape and Nature Photography
October 24, 2015

Instructor: Larry Lindahl
Join professional photographer Larry Lindahl for a one-day workshop to capture the ethereal light of this primordial landscape.
We will find ourselves photographing among oddly shaped geology, broken logs of petrified wood, an ancient Indian ruin overlooking the Puerco River, petroglyphs hidden among the cliffs, and finish the day with a sunset shoot at the Crystal Forest.
The workshop begins at 10:30 am at the Painted Desert Visitor Center on the north end of the park. Our group will then caravan through the park from north to south, a total of 28 miles, taking two short hikes into scenic areas.
Two short hikes take us first into the wonderland of Blue Mesa, and then through the Crystal Forest for sunset.
Our first hike goes into the inner world of Blue Mesa. The trail is only a one-mile loop, and it’s worth every step. It begins somewhat steep, so the park designates it moderate to strenuous, but when the trail levels and starts to amble around an enclosed bowl of petrified logs and striped rock formations, we will be photographing some of the most engaging scenery in the park.
About an hour before sunset we will take the Crystal Forest Trail, a 3/4-mile loop among some of the most richly colored petrified logs in the park. These ancient logs lay across a barren slope that gently leans west, an ideal place to finish the day as the light turns golden before sunset.
To reach the Painted Desert Visitor Center take I-40 to Exit 311 about 25 minutes east of Holbrook or about 1 hr., 45 minutes east of Flagstaff.
